bye bye, kitty

Osama “‘Sama” Moore, 1993 – 2009
I had to say good-bye, long distance, to my kitty yesterday. While the entire bird population of Minneapolis and vicinity is surely heaving a great tweet of relief right now, we will miss him terribly. He was an avid hunter (despite our efforts to keep him leashed and belled), squirrel chaser, catnip mouse lover, and sunny-spot lounger, with an independent spirit and a regal manner. Still, he found lots of time for cuddling and lap-sitting, and purred loudly when content. He was born to a feral cat in the back alleys of Uptown, Minneapolis, but was taken in by a friend one January night when the temperature dipped to -20º. She couldn’t keep him, and she knew I was dying for a cat, so she passed him on to me. He was named for a friend of my roommate at the time (long before I was aware of the terrorist of the same name, just to dispel any rumors) who told me the name means “lion” in Arabic. It seemed fitting at the time, and he certainly lived up to it. After a long and cushy life, he succumbed to kidney failure, probably the result of his mad lust for corn chips. We will cherish his memory.

It's so hard to say good-bye to a sweet kitty, isn't it?

It is! He was certainly one of a kind.

I remember when Maren and I took care of him while your mother was out of town, and he was terrific fun with his animated personality. I'm sorry to hear he is gone.

And what a beautiful “Lion” he was…I feel as though I knew him as well from your eulogy of him…happy journey to him!

Jen, I'm so sorry to say goodbye to Osama. I was fortunate to see him before he died and give him a smile, a coo, and a pet which he acknowledged with distant courtesy, faint movement and steady stare. I offered him chicken soup, but he was beyond even that well-known healing succor. He will always be in our memories along with Ralph, the cheese-loving pooch. That is their immortality; the best we can do. My condolences to you and your mom.
    Love, Diane

So sorry to hear this. I remember him (circa thxgiving 2001) as a charmer. And as the terminal emperor of your mother´s garden.
I hope he is in a good place now. Tiny tears…

Thanks for the comments, everybody. We just got back from my mom's in MN, where we all missed his presence. It was my first Christmas home in 16 years that I didn't make him a catnip mouse on Christmas eve!

Im so sorry for your loss…..

  • jen, years back a random string of events brought me to your mom's (with my boyfriend, cat and dog) to housesit for six weeks. one was your last shift at lucia's being my first.

we adored osama and his mischief — i won't forget his walking along the brick ledge around the second floor after spending the night on the prowl. he surely was a special one.

i'm happy to have stumbled upon you again. your garden and fabrics inspire.
