So, last week my husband had surgery on his upper jaw. We knew it was coming, and had been planning for it for a while, so we knew the drill: he’ll be eating a liquid-only diet for 2 months, and at first just through a straw, while his jaw heals. I agreed to stick to the diet too, out of solidarity, and also because I somehow felt it justified my eating ice cream whenever I wanted. I was actually kind of excited, because I love soup and I was planning all the yummy ones we could try.
Well, it’s now been 4 days, and for the most part, it’s not too bad. Lots of fruit and yoghurt smoothies, juices, and yes, yummy soups. But in 4 days I’ve already made 4 pureed soups, and I can see that I’m going to run out of ideas fairly soon. Does anyone want to contribute a pureed soup recipe? Any other ideas for dinner through a straw? I’d welcome any suggestions, as I still have 54 days to go…

15 years agoI was just having a conversation with a group of people about jaws being wired shut. I was remembering the Real Worlds series when one of the girls did it to lose weight. I will try to brain storm some liquid food for you to make.

15 years agoThat would be great, Amelia! Losing some weight wouldn’t kill me, but my husband DEFINITELY doesn’t need to lose any! Thanks for the comment.

15 years agoHi Jennifer, I would suggest a root vegetable puree? Try any combo of these veggies: potatoes, rutabagas, parsnips, carrots, turnips, celeriac, cauliflower…..my favorite is potato, carrot, celeriac, and cauliflower. Peel, roughly chop, and boil in salted water until very tender. Drain, then either in your food processor or blender puree with chicken or vegetable stock. Add butter or olive oil to your liking and spices ( I like thyme and oregano, but you could get creative). The amount of stock you add will determine the consistency of the finished puree. This is very hardy, all the starches will “stick to your ribs” as they say and it will give a nice balance to the sweeter juices that you are currently (probably getting sick of) using. My only concern is that it might be a bit to thick for your guy. I hope this helps. I stumbled upon your blog today looking for fabric inspiration and boy did I get it. Beautiful fabrics. Best of luck to you.

15 years agoHi Sarah – great idea! That sounds delicious and pretty easy to do, and I think if I add enough stock I could get it thin enough for Dave to drink. Thanks for checking out the site!

15 years agoMy first thought is one of milkshakes. But I guess you can’t live on those! You are a really good sport to go along with him. (But you could always sneak some pretzels in the bathtub and he’d never know!)

15 years agoHi,
I suggest a French Onion Soup (you could pureed it for your husband), a creamy mushroom soup, watercress soup, asparagus soup, a miso soup… hum…running out of ideas for now…
Good luck!!
